Royal Norwegian Consulate -
LEED GOLD
Architect: Bailey Architects, Inc
Location: Houston, Texas
The project is certified LEED Gold. Sustainable strategies include reusing over 75% of the existing building, covered parking, a high solar reflectance roof to reduce the heat island effect, bicycle racks and on-site changing facilities, dedicated spaces for low-emitting vehicles, low-flow plumbing fixtures, native vegetation, energy-efficient mechanical systems, and the use of low VOC and recycled materials.
Kudela & Weinheimer Landscape Architects were responsible for all of the outside landscaping and hard-scaping design. To help achieve the LEED certification K&W used; all native and adaptive plants, a 50% irrigation water reduction by using drip irrigation and smart controllers, permeable parking surfaces and driveways, protected all existing trees, design of a rain harvesting system and adapting everything to the existing site to be retrofit. The landscape architecture to the site also included a court yard with themed elements of Norway, a trellis inspired by boats and hard-scape materials native to Norway.
